INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Mavericks silenced the Wichita Thunder on Saturday night by the score of 5-2. The win sealed the home team's victory over the Thunder in the Independence Cup rivalry series- presented by Independence Tourism, and increased Missouri's win streak to fourteen games.

The Independence Cup title is awarded annually to the team with the highest point total through the Mavericks and Thunder's regular-season series. The Mavs claimed their sixteenth out of a possible thirty points over the Thunder on Saturday evening, making it impossible for Wichita to recover and edge Missouri through the remainder of their 2015-16 match-ups. The Thunder have only earned one point in eight games played against the Mavericks so far this season (SOL Nov. 14).

In addition to the Independence Cup title, the Mavericks will also be awarded a monetary donation toward their local youth hockey program from the Wichita Thunder.

The Mavericks began their night with a goal from rookie defenseman Kyle Burroughs, his first of the season, at 6:24 of the opening frame. The goal, assisted by Tanner Fritz and Colin Markison, cued a flood of teddy bears to rain down on the Mavs home ice for their annual Teddy Bear Toss night. All of the collected toys will be distributed to local children in need by Community Services League and Friends of Special People.

Andrew Courtney moved the Mavs up 2-0 at 10:55 with the help of Carter Verhaeghe and Rocco Carzo. The Thunder cut into Missouri's lead in the final minutes of the period in a man-advantage situation. Ian Lowe scored the power-play goal, aided by former Mavs defenseman Landon Oslanski and Danick Gauthier at 18:09.

Carter Verhaeghe took a feed from Tyler Barnes and Jesse Root at 4:14 of the second period to boost the Mavericks up 3-1 over the Thunder, but the home team was far from finished at their scoreboard run. Bryce Aneloski lit the lamp at 10:20 on a power-play. Aneloski's first goal of the season was assisted by Josh Holmstrom and Rocco Carzo. Then rookie Colin Markison pushed the Mavs up 5-1 just 1:39 later with his own tally, aided by Holmstrom and Fritz.

Missouri maintained their 5-2 lead through the remainder of regulation.

Net-minder Josh Robinson made twenty-two saves through a full sixty minutes between the pipes for the Mavericks. Robinson is currently ranked third in the league amongst top goaltenders with a 1.65 goals-against average (GAA) and a .931 save percentage (SV%).

The Missouri Mavericks wore specialty "throwback" jerseys on Saturday night to honor the fifty years of hockey history in Kansas City and kick-off their campaign to create a special "Hockey History Wall" feature in Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. The game-worn jerseys were auctioned-off in a live auction after the game with proceeds benefitting Community Services League (CSL).
