K-Wings' Defense Stout, But Late Flurry Propels Beast
December 6, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
BRAMPTON, ON, CA- In a contest dominated by team defense, it was the Brampton Beast defeating the Kalamazoo Wings, 3-0 on Sunday at the Powerade Centre.
The opening period ended without any scoring, as Joel Martin made nine first-period saves. The Wings only mustered up four first-period shots, but Kalamazoo were stout defensively, killing off two Brampton power play opportunities in the period.
The second period featured a bit more action than the first, but it was the defenses from both teams that were highlighted. Kalamazoo killed off a five-on-three early in the frame, and Brampton killed off four Kalamazoo power plays in the period, as the game entered the third period in a scoreless tie.
Brampton cracked open the scoring early in the third with a tally from Luke Pither. The Beast forced a turnover in the neutral zone, and Pither drove the goal to receive a back door feed from Chris Auger. Pither received the feed and chipped in his sixth of the year.
Moments later and operating on the man advantage, Brampton generated pressure while Auger positioned himself in front of the goal. The forward got his stick on a Brandon Marino shot, and deflected it over the stick of Martin and into the goal.
The game was put away by Pither, who buried an empty netter from his own end of the ice, capping the game off with a 3-0 final.
Notes: It was the final game of a six-day, four-game road trip for Kalamazoo (1-3-0-0). Kalamazoo had played nine of their last ten games away from Wings Event Center, and will return home on Friday, December 11, to begin a five-game home stand. It was the second of nine meetings between Kalamazoo and Brampton on the season.
