Orlando Solar Bears News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Solar Bears (9-7-1-3), proud affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and the AHL's Toronto Marlies, split their weekend series with the Atlanta Gladiators (11-8-1-0) with a 4-3 loss in front of 5,064 on Sunday afternoon at the Amway Center.
The Solar Bears opened the scoring with their league-leading seventh shorthanded goal of the season in the first period when Eric Faille muscled the puck into the attacking zone, and then fed Brady Vail. Vail walked into the slot and fired a wrist shot that beat Kent Patterson at 11:05.
The Gladiators evened the score on the power play at 1-1 when Max Everson drilled a shot from the right point past Ryan Massa at 17:46 to end the rookie goalie's shutout streak at 77:46.
After neither team scored in the second frame, Atlanta gained its first lead of the night when Thomas Frazee beat Massa from the right circle at 2:08.
Frazee added to his totals with another tally at 7:43, and Daniel Bahntge made it 4-1 for the Gladiators at 8:10.
Matt Rupert ended Atlanta's four-goal run with a power-play goal as he jammed home a loose puck past Patterson at 11:28.
Ryan Rupert then pulled the Solar Bears to within one with another power-play marker when he one-timed a feed from Brad Richard at 16:20.
Despite pulling Massa, Orlando could not force a tie score in the waning moments of the game, and Patterson hung on to preserve the win for the Gladiators.
Massa took the loss with 32 saves on 36 shots; Patterson earned the victory with 30 stops on 33 shots.
