Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals received power-play goals from Zach Tolkinen and Allan McPherson in addition to 22 saves from C.J. Motte en route to a 3-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings.
Neither team was able to break through in the opening 20 minutes as C.J. Motte and Clay Witt turned aside 10 shots apiece in the first frame. The only penalty of the quiet period came against Motte for playing the puck outside of the trapezoid area.
The Jackals poured on the shots in the second period and eventually broke the scoreless tie at 15:19 of the middle stanza. Colin Jacobs directed the puck to Zach Tolkinen at the top of the circle and Tolkinen released a wrist shot past Witt for the power-play marker and his first goal of the season. Just minutes later, the Jackals went back on the power-play and struck again. Justin Bernhardt fed the puck from the point to Spiro Goulakos at the hashmarks and Goulakos placed a perfect pass onto the stick of Allan McPherson for the tip-in tally at 18:44 of the second period. McPherson's power-play marker was his fourth goal of the season. The Jackals out-shot the Wings 18-4 in the second period.
The Wings hung around and narrowed the Jackals lead down to one with a rebound effort at 9:39 by Tanner Sorenson. Justin Kovacs and Lane Scheidl earned the assists on Sorenson's fifth goal of the season. Kalamazoo pushed for the tying tally, but Mike Seidel was able to deposit the empty-net goal and seal the victory for the Jackals. Seidel's seventh goal of the season was his first marker since November 10th.
C.J. Motte turned aside 22 of 23 shots faced for his third consecutive win. Clay Witt allowed two goals on 36 shots faced and was saddled with the loss.
