Kansas City Mavericks News Release

TULSA, Okla. - The Missouri Mavericks used a three-goal outburst in the second period to wipe out an early Tulsa lead and claim a 3-2 road win on Friday night. The win got Missouri off to the start it wanted on a weekend that features three games in as many days, and it improved the Mavericks' record to 9-10-3 on the season.

The Mavericks and Oilers were on even footing for much of the first period, but a short stretch proved to be the difference as Tulsa grabbed a 2-0 lead. The Oilers were able to create a pair of turnovers 1:46 apart and score on each of them. Former Maverick Garrett Ladd netted the first at 12:14 and Darcy Murphy deflected a Tyson Wilson point shot past Josh Robinson at 14:00. The Mavericks tested Tulsa goalie Jamie Phillips with eight shots in the frame including a number of quality chances. Dan Correale was able to get a puck through Phillips' five hole, but it skittered wide of the net instead of across the line. Sam Povorozniouk had a good look late in the period on a 2-on-1 but his shot missed over the crossbar.

Missouri turned the momentum of the game on its ear in the second period to the tune of a 16-6 shot advantage. Three of those 16 shots hit paydirt and the Mavericks grabbed the lead at 3-2. Darren Nowick led the charge with a shorthanded goal at 3:11 with assists from Dane Fox and Gus Young. It was Nowick's sixth of the season and the Mavericks' third shorthanded goal. Jacob Doty was next up at 8:58 with help from Dan Correale and Tyler Elbrecht. Doty was left alone on the right wing and he sniped a shot past Phillips cleanly. Sam Povorozniouk bested Phillips with a backhander from the slot 2:18 after Doty tied the game, and gave the Mavericks their first lead of the night. Missouri was awarded four power plays in the period but was unable to convert on the man advantage.

The Mavericks faced a furious Oilers comeback bid in the third period and had to turn it away with a thin defensive corps. Rookie Kevin Tansey was injured delivering a check midway through the frame and did not return. Several Mavericks came up with timely shot
