South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) have announced that defenseman Joey Leach has been recalled Friday. The 24-year-old played in three games last weekend for the Stingrays in Greenville after starting the season with Hershey, helping South Carolina to two wins by totaling three assists.
In 12 games with the Bears this season, Leach also has three assists, 18 penalty minutes and a +3 rating. The Wadena, Sask. native is in his second year with the Hershey organization after signing with the Bears prior to the 2015-16 season.
Last year Leach spent six games with Hershey, but became a fan favorite while playing in South Carolina. The defenseman suited up for 58 regular season games with the Stingrays and scored 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) with 122 penalty minutes and a +40 rating. He then appeared in 19 postseason contests, scoring five points (two goals, three assists) with 34 penalty minutes.
Previously a third round selection of the Calgary Flames in the 2010 NHL Draft, Leach is now in his fourth full professional season. He spent the majority of 2014-2015 with the Fort Wayne Komets, scoring 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 52 games. Leach also played four years of junior hockey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Kootenay Ice where he was an offensive threat from the blue line. In his final two seasons, Leach notched a total of 77 points. The defenseman made his professional debut in 2012 with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL.
South Carolina has now won five of their last six games and hosts Greenville for two more contests this weekend on Friday and Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
Single-game tickets for the 2016-17 season are on sale now at the North Charleston Coliseum Box Office and ticketmaster.com.
