Mathews homers, triples, drives in three, but Fisher Cats fall 7-4 in Trenton

Trenton, NJ- Aaron Mathews hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to give the Fisher Cats a 4-3 lead, but Trenton rallied with four in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 7-4 win Thursday night at Waterfront Park.

New Hampshire (19-33) was bidding to sweep the series from the first-place Thunder. The Fisher Cats trailed 3-0 going to the top of the sixth inning. Scott Campbell singled and Mathews (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) tripled him home to get the Fisher Cats on the board against Trenton starter George Kontos. Travis Snider then drove in Mathews with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.

In the top of the eighth inning, Anthony Hatch singled off Thunder reliever Zack Korenke and moved up on a sacrifice by Jonathan Diaz. After Campbell grounded out, Mathews hit his third home run of the season to put the Fisher Cats in front 4-3.

Brandon Magee worked the first seven innings for New Hampshire, allowing 10 hits, but only three runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

Trenton's P.J. Pilittere led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single off reliever Brandon Camardese (0-1). Kevin Russo (3-for-4, RBI) followed with a triple to tie the game. Reegie Corona singled Russo home to put the Thunder in front 5-4. Cody Ehlers (1-for-2, 3 RBI) drove in two more runs later in the inning with a double off Daryl Harang for the final margin.

The Thunder (34-19) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning off Magee. Colin Curtis (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) drove in the first run with a fielders choice groundout and Ehlers had a sacrifice fly.

Curtis homered in the third inning to give Trenton a 3-0 lead for Kontos, who worked the first seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out six.

Michael Gardner (3-3) earned the win in relief, pitching 1.1 shutout innings. Gardner got pinch-hitter Kyle Phillips to fly out to left field to end the game with two on base for New Hampshire.

The Fisher Cats open a four-game series Friday night at 6:35pm against the Portland Sea Dogs. LHP Kris Johnson (3-2, 3.40) starts for Portland against LHP Ricky Romero (2-3, 5.86) for the Fisher Cats.
