Altoona Curve News Release

BOWIE, MD- The Altoona Curve were able to pull off a three-game series sweep of the first place Bowie Baysox, prevailing in a see-saw game by the final score of 9-8 at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday night.

In come-from-behind fashion, the Curve rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning off Bowie reliever Julio Manon (1-2).

Down 7-4 headed into the frame, Manon issued back-to-back walks to Jason Delaney and Anthony Webster, which set the stage for Luis Cruz. Cruz doubled home Delaney to cut the Curve deficit to a 7-5.

Jason Bowers, who was returned to Altoona on Wednesday from Indianapolis, singled to bring in a pair of runs and draw the game even at 7-7. Bowers reached second base on a ground out, and in his efforts to steal third base, a throwing error for Bowie catcher Brian Peterson scored Bowers to put the Curve ahead 8-7. Bowers finished the night with three runs driven in.

Altoona added a much-needed insurance run in the top of the ninth as Cruz again singled home Delaney to put the Curve up by a pair, 9-7. Altoona would need that insurance run. Bowie (32-22) rallied in the ninth of reliever Pat Bresnehan, as the Baysox scored a run to cut the Curve lead to one. With Luis Montanez representing the winning run, Bresnehan induced a line-out to right field to secure his second save of the year and the third straight win for the Curve.

Derek Hankins started for Altoona and allowed three runs over four innings of work.

Juan Mateo tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed four earned runs before he was relieved by Dave Davidson. Davidson (1-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to notch his first victory of the season.

Melvin Dorta (2-for-4), Brad Corley (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), Delaney (2-for-3), Webster (2-for-3), and Cruz (2-for-5, 2 RBI) each had a multi-hit games.

The Curve will continue their six-day, seven-game road trip Friday evening with the opener of a four-game series against the Erie SeaWolves (AA/Detroit Tigers) at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA. Friday's first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Jimmy Barthmaier (2-4, 4.86) will look to snap a personal four-game losing skid as he is scheduled to make the start for Altoona. Erie will counter with lefty Luke French (3-4, 3.82).

NOTES - Brad Corley smashed his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot in the fourth inning. It was his second in as many days and the second time this year Corley has homered in consecutive days...Shelby Ford, who had three hits last night played in his second game since being activated off the Curve D.L., but went 0-for-3...Miguel Perez (0-for-4) played in his first game with Altoona since April 14 when he dislocated his left shoulder diving back into first base at Trenton...Thursday's game (3:22) was the longest Curve game of the season...Thursday's win is the third straight for Altoona matching their longest winning streak of the year.
