Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Portland, ME) - The Binghamton Mets (25-27) scored six times in the 8th inning off reliever Chad Rhoades (2-1) to salvage the series finale with the Sea Dogs, 6-2 Thursday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Mets 3B Daniel Murphy delivered the biggest blow of the frame with a 3-run double to aid Binghamton to the win. The loss snapped the 'Dogs 5-game winning streak against the Mets.
The big 8th inning began with an infield single by Josh Petersen. Jose Coronado walked before Petersen was forced out at 3rd base by a bunt attempt from Rafael Arroyo. That's when the trouble began for Portland. Eric Reed laid down a bunt-single to load the bases. Emmanuel Garcia came next with an RBI single before Murphy smoked his double off the right field wall. Caleb Stewart added a run-scoring single before Rhoades gave way to relief pitcher Daniel Bard. Ambiorix Concepcion drove in the final run of the inning with a ground-out to 3B Andrew Pinckney. The final line for the inning was an ugly one: six earned runs on six hits and a walk, all charged to Rhoades.
The final score was not indicative of what took place during the first seven innings. Portland's Michael Bowden ND) continued his run of dominance, giving up three hits in 6.2 shutout innings. He added another five strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 2.20, 3rd lowest in the Eastern League. Bowden was denied his 5th win because the Mets' Bobby Parnell was just as good, throwing 6.1 shutout innings at the 'Dogs. He left in 7th with two runners on-base, but Eddie Camacho got the Mets out of that jam. Camacho (3-2) would earn the win, working the final 2.2 innings on three hits two runs (one earned) and one strikeout.
Portland's offense was kept off the board until the 9th inning. RF Zach Daeges led off the 9th with a triple. He was doubled home by DH Sandy Madera. Daeges and Madera had the only multi-hit games for Portland, each going 2-4. Ryan Khoury greeted Tim Lavigne with an RBI single to left-field.
The loss leaves the 'Dogs with a 5-2 mark on their 7-game homestand. They'll hit the road for a brief, 4-game weekend road trip to New Hampshire beginning tomorrow night. LHP Kris Johnson (3-2, 3.40) will open the series against New Hampshire's Ricky Romero (2-3, 5.86). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm. Radio coverage begins at 6:10pm on the US Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network.
Notes: Daeges' two hits extended his on-base streak to an EL-best 28 games...Bowden has allowed just one unearned run in his last 13.2 innings...Binghamton's 8th inning rally snapped an 0-for-21 stretch with runners in scoring position in the series...Portland won the season series with the Mets, winning nine of eleven games.
