Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - After sweeping Portland, Akron, Erie, and Connecticut at home in May, the Baysox got a taste of their own medicine Thursday. The Altoona Curve completed a three-game sweep of the Bowie Baysox in a back-and-forth 9-8 victory at Prince George's stadium. The Curve were fueled by timely hitting and several costly errors by the Baysox. The Baysox conceded nine runs on twelve hits and committed three errors, but had a chance to steal the game from Altoona in the bottom of the ninth and came up just short.
After pitching a scoreless first, Baysox starter Jason Berken watched as center fielder Mike Rodriguez led off the bottom half of the inning with his first homerun of the season. Things went downhill from there, as Berken lasted only 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout. Ryan Keefer came in to pitch 2.2 innings of solid relief, walking one batter and striking out three without giving up a hit. He was in line for the victory before he was relieved to start the eighth inning.
Curve right fielder Brad Corley hit his fourth homerun of the year to right field in the third inning to put Altoona ahead 3-1. Nolan Reimold answered right back for Bowie.
Reimold began the game on the bench, ready to enjoy his first day off of the year, when starting left fielder Sebastien Boucher was struck by an errant throw and was forced to leave the game. Reimold came in to replace Boucher in the field in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the inning, with a man on, he crushed a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left field to tie the game at three.
It appeared that the Baysox had broken the game open in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one man out, Nolan Reimold was hit by a pitch, and scored on a double by Jonathan Tucker. Blake Davis followed with a walk, and Mike Rodriguez collected his second RBI of the contest with a base hit through the hole at third, scoring Tucker. Rodriguez went to third on a single by Carlos Rojas and scored on a balk by Altoona reliever Dave Davidson, putting the Baysox ahead 7-4.
Bowie brought in closer Julio Manon to protect the lead in the top of the eighth inning, but he could not silence the Altoona bats. Manon walked the first two batters he faced. Shortstop Luis Cruz hit an RBI double to center field. Jason Bowers followed with a single, scoring two more runs. Manon was able to get catcher Miguel Perez to ground out for out number one, but Bowers advanced to second on the play. Manon then intentionally walked second baseman Shelby Ford to set up the force play and got Melvin Dorta to strike out for the second out of the inning. With left fielder Jonel Pacheco up, Jason Bowers stole third base and Brian Peterson's throw sailed into foul territory, allowing Bowers to score the fourth run of the inning. Manon was able to get Pacheco to fly out to left, but the Curve had re-taken the lead, 8-7.
The Baysox brought in righty Kam Mickolio to work the top of the ninth inning. With one out in the inning, Jason Delaney singled to center and moved to second on an infield single by Anthony Webster. With runners on first and second, Luis Cruz singled to center, driving in Delaney. Anthony Webster attempted to go to third on the play and center fielder Mike Rodriguez threw to third, but the ball got away from Jeff Nettles. Webster then attempted to score, but Nettles chased the ball down and threw Webster out at home. Cruz wound up at third on the play but was only credited a single and an RBI. Mickolio got Jason Bowers to ground out to end the inning.
The Baysox came up in the bottom of the ninth down 9-7. Altoona brought in righty Pat Bresnehan to try to get the save but he walked Jonathan Tucker to lead off the inning. Bresnehan then got shortstop Blake Davis and center fielder Mike Rodriguez both to fly out to left field. Carlos Rojas came to the plate with a man on first and two out and managed to get a base hit into right center. With runners on first and second, Lou Montanez laced a double into left field. The runners were going on the pitch and Tucker scored easily from second base. Rojas was held at third and Montanez pulled in to second with an RBI double before Nettles flew out to center to end the game.
With the loss, the Baysox are 32-22 and remain one game up on Harrisburg atop the Southern Division. They will open a three game road series at Akron Friday at 7:05. RHP Chris Tillman (6-0, 2.59 ERA) will pitch for the Baysox against RHP Kevin Dixon (2-4, 4.53 ERA).
The Bowie Baysox are in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Baysox individual game tickets, season ticket plans, group outings, picnics and birthday parties are currently available for booking by calling the Baysox front office at (301) 464-4880.
