'Wolves Sweep R-Phils

The SeaWolves completed a series sweep of the Reading Phillies with a 9-7 win at Jerry Uht Park on Thursday night.

Reading struck first in the top of the third inning against Erie starter Danny Christensen. Jason Donald doubled with one out and moved to third on a Greg Golson single. Lou Marson followed with a single, scoring Donald, for a 1-0 Reading lead.

The ‘Wolves came back in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1 when Kody Kirkland led off and homered over the wall in left for his third long ball of the season.

The Phillies regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Christensen retired the first two batters of the inning before giving up a single to Jake Blalock. Neil Sellers followed and grounded a ball to third. On the play, Kirkland bobbled the ball allowing both runners to reach safely. Michael Spidale came up and connected on a three-run home run, his second of the season, giving Reading a 4-1 lead.

The ‘Wolves would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Kirkland singled, Max Leon walked and Deik Scram was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Wilkin Ramirez. Ramirez roped a double down the right field line, scoring Kirkland and Leon to make it a one-run game at 4-3. Jeff Frazier then sent a rope passed a diving Golson in center, the ball went to the wall, plating two more runs and putting Erie ahead 5-4. Frazier ended at third base with his first triple of the season. Ryan Roberson then singled home Frazier for a 6-4 Erie lead. Will Rhymes continued the hit barrage with a single to put two on for Max St. Pierre. The R-Phils went to the bullpen to bring in reliever Fabio Castro. St. Pierre swatted a three-run home run, his fourth, giving the ‘Wolves a 9-4 advantage.

Reading cut into the lead in the top of the seventh. Donald led off the inning with a walk. Golson then doubled home Donald against reliever Marcelo Perez to make it a 9-5 game. Golson would later score on a Hammond groundout to make it a three-run game at 9-6.

The R-Phils closed the gap once again in the top of the eighth when Mike Eylward scored on an error to make it a two-run game at 9-7.

In the ninth, reliever Brendan Wise hit the first batter he faced before inducing a fly ball to center and a 6-3 double play to end the game. Wise picked up his first save of the season.

Christensen (2-4) picked up his second win in as many starts going six-plus innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The ‘Wolves are 3-0 in the last three games started by Christensen.

The sweep for Erie was their first since taking four straight against Bowie to start the season. It's the ‘Wolves first three-game winning streak since taking four-straight April 25-29.
