Marlies Outlast Chops on Tuesday, 3-1
January 13, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
Thanks to two 3rd period goals, the Toronto Marlies (21-15-1-3, 46 pts.) kept the Iowa Chops (20-15-2-3, 45 pts.) winless at home during their current six-game homestand with a 3-1 defeat on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The Chops were once again helped early by the goaltending of JP Levasseur, who made some key early saves as Toronto opened up a 9-1 shots advantage to start the Tuesday night clash. The Chops had a power play late in the period that they couldn't covert on, but fired in three shots during the man-advantage on Marlies goaltender Justin Pogge. With just over a minute to go Toronto took a 1-0 lead. The Chops were headed to the penalty box on a delayed penalty call as Brent Aubin found himself alone in the high slot and fired a wrist shot underneath the blocker glove of Levasseur to give the Marlies the lead after the 1st period. The Chops controlled the 2nd period, which was played without a penalty on either side. The Chops got the equalizer off a Marlies turnover as captain Ajay Baines collected a puck off the boards and fired a snapshot over the catching glove of Pogge to tie the game at 1-1. The Chops had several chances to take the lead, outshooting Toronto 11-4 in the 2nd period, but Pogge held strong and the score remained tied at 1-1. The Marlies went back on the attack in the 3rd period. They caught the Chops napping while on a power play and Alex Foster made Iowa pay with a shorthanded goal by working his way to the front of the net and banging home a loose puck after a couple of chances to give the Marlies a 2-1 lead. Just 1:22 later, the Marlies put the game out of reach with an even-strength goal from max Max Taylor. The 3rd period wasn't without its chances for the Chops, as they had two 5 on 3 power plays, but could not convert as the offense scored just one goal for the third straight game. The next Iowa Chops home game is this Friday, January 16th at 7:05pm at the Wells Fargo Arena against the Quad City Flames. For more information, call 564-8700 or visit www.iowachops.com
