Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings have recalled goaltender Joey MacDonald from the Grand Rapids Griffins and reassigned goaltender Thomas McCollum to the Griffins from the ECHL's Toledo Walleye.
MacDonald, 30, served a 15-game stint as the Red Wings' backup netminder from Oct. 28 to Dec. 1, seeing his only action in relief of Jimmy Howard during Detroit's 5-1 loss at Atlanta on Nov. 24, when he stopped seven of eight shots during the third period. He's appeared in 72 NHL games with Detroit, Toronto, the New York Islanders and Boston during his career, going 18-38-9 with one shutout, a 3.30 goals against average and a 0.900 save percentage.
The Griffins' all-time leader in wins (98) and shutouts (17), MacDonald needs four more appearances to tie Howard's 186 as the most for a goalie in Grand Rapids history. In 18 games with the Griffins this season, he owns a 10-7-1 record with one shutout, a 2.70 GAA and a 0.898 save percentage. MacDonald will back up Howard tonight when the Red Wings visit Colorado at 9:30 EST.
McCollum, 21, began this season with the Griffins, going 5-10-2 with one shutout, a 3.11 GAA and a 0.884 save percentage in 17 appearances. Reassigned to Toledo on Dec. 23, he has since compiled a 3-1 record with one shutout, a 2.55 GAA and a 0.913 save percentage in five games with the Walleye.
McCollum and Jordan Pearce will serve as the Griffins' goaltending tandem when they begin a four-game Texas road swing on Thursday with an 8 p.m. EST clash against the San Antonio Rampage.
