Lynx\'s Home Winning Streak Ends At Six Games Against Express

March 22, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

The Augusta Lynx went 2-2-0 this week, finally beating rival Gwinnett and seeing a team-record six game home winning streak snapped on Sunday against the Roanoke Express.

3/16 Augusta 1 @ Gwinnett 4

Augusta traveled to Gwinnett in hopes of finding their first win against the Gladiators this season, but only found one goal from Terry Marchant as Gwinnett moved out to a 3-0 lead en route to a 4-1 win over the Lynx. Jason Saal stopped 37 shots in taking the loss for Augusta. Steve Slonina's one goal, one assist performance paced the Gladiators while Chris Durno added a pair of helpers.

3/19 Charlotte 4 @ Augusta 5 (OT)

This game was a back and forth battle that saw Charlotte score first on a Doug Christiansen marker that put the Checkers ahead 1-0 after the first period. Augusta came back to tie the game late in the second period when Louis Goulet scored a shorthanded goal from Scott Corbett, and what appeared to be a defensive struggle through two periods of play saw the clubs even at 1-1. In the final frame, however, the two teams exploded for three goals each. Scott Kelman, Jonathan Gagnon, and Todd Bennett tallied for Augusta while Christiansen, Allan Egeland, and Blaz Emersic replied for Charlotte. With 33 seconds left in the OT period, Terry Marchant followed up the rebound of a Greg Jacina rush to give Augusta the win 5-4. Jason Saal earned the victory with 30 saves on the night.

3/20 Gwinnett 2 @ Augusta 5

Augusta jumped ahead 1-0 on Martin Lapointe's first goal of the night just 4:06 into the contest, but Steve Slonina tied it for the Gladiators towards the end of the first period, knotting the game at 1-1 heading into the second period. Louis Goulet scored the only goal of the middle frame to put Augusta ahead 2-1, and the Lynx opened the third period on Todd Bennett's power play goal at :16, followed by Goulet's second of the night at :50 for a 4-1 lead. The Gladiators would pull within two but could come no closer as Lapointe added his second goal of the evening for a 5-2 final score. Jason Saal made 42 saves on the night for the Lynx, who beat Gwinnett for the first time in six tries.

3/21 Roanoke 5 @ Augusta 3

Louis Goulet scored in his third straight game to open the contest and give the Lynx a 1-0 lead in the second period. But Roanoke came back with three straight goals to close the scoring in the middle frame, putting Augusta down 3-1 after 40 minutes. The Lynx battled back to within 3-2 on Todd Bennett's 20th goal of the season, but the Express attack was too much. Sporting a 4-2 lead Brandon Doria brought Augusta back within a goal with 59 seconds left, but an empty netter sealed the game for Roanoke at 5-3. The loss brought to an end Augusta's six game home undefeated streak and eight game (7-0-1) unbeaten in regulation streak, both of which were team records.
