Lynx win Valentine's Day thriller over Gwinnett

February 14, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

Team captain Ryan Lang provided the heroics on a St. Valentine's Day game that more resembled the Fourth of July for its offensive fireworks in a 6-5 Augusta Lynx win over the Gwinnett Gladiators.

Lang scored the dramatic game-winning goal with just eight seconds remaining in regulation time, picking up the deflection off a Ken Scuderi point shot and beating Gwinnett (33-11-5) goaltender Sean Fields over the left shoulder. Joel Stepp pulled the draw back to Scuderi to begin the play with just 13 seconds remaining after the Gladiators took an ill-fated icing call.

Augusta (20-25-4) had to fight to overcome early deficits, trailing 2-0 and 3-1 before getting out of the first period behind 3-2. Milan Gajic scored twice to boost Gwinnett to the two-goal lead, but Nicolas Corbeil cut the advantage in half with an unassisted breakaway goal at 10:47. Cam Brown made it 3-1 before Dough Wright cashed in a Lang feed from the corner of the Gwinnett zone to close the opening frame with the Lynx down a goal.

Lang then notched his first tally of the contest from Wright and BJ Gaustad at 10:43 of the second period to tie the game. It proved to be the only goal of the period and set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Jeff Campbell put Gwinnett up 4-3 just 3:35 into the final frame, but Martin Lapointe responded at the 5:00 mark to make it a 4-4 contest. Back came the Gladiators, this time off the stick of Brad Schell to reclaim the lead at 9:50. Brian Passmore's seeing-eye goal from the side of the net somehow eluded Fields (25 saves) and slipped through his pads to tie the contest with 5:54 remaining, setting the stage for Lang's last-second stunner.

Jason Wolfe earned the win with 13 saves on 15 shots in relief of Mike Wall, who played the opening 20 minutes and allowed three goals on 17 shots. The game's only power plays came in the first period, with Gwinnett going 1-for-1 and Augusta 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
