
Checkers survive late charge by Ice Pilots

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers scored on four power play goals en route to a 6-4 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots Tuesday in front of 3,590 fans at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Kenton Smith notched a goal and two assists to lead the Checkers and earn the First Star of the game.
Six Checkers found the net as Charlotte fired 42 shots on goal while holding Pensacola to just 25. Charlotte had goals from Rory Rawlyk, Dusty Jamieson, Smith, Ryan Fultz, Brandon Cullen and Neil Petruic. Rawlyk, Cullen and Jamieson also notched an assist each.
The Checkers opened up a two-goal lead 37 seconds into the second period and held that cushion until the 19:01 mark of the second period when Pensacola's Pete Gardiner scored. The Checkers answered back 27 seconds later to take another two-goal lead.
The Checkers took a 5-2 lead at the 2:49 mark of the third period and survived a mid-period charge by the Ice Pilots as they scored two goals cutting the deficit to just one.
The Checkers sealed the game at the 18:51 mark as Petruic set the final score at 6-2.
Charlotte converted on 4 of 9 power play chances while Pensacola was 2-of-8 on the power play.
Jeff Glass picked up his 13th win of the season making 21 saves and David Cann took the loss making 36 saves.
