Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY - Nick Martini knocked two three-run homers, but the Louisville Bats (41-36) ultimately fell 14-8 to the Indianapolis Indians (36-42) on Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
Louisville got to work straight away, scoring their first run in the bottom of the first inning. Christian Encarnacion-Strand singled his first time up at the plate and later scored on an RBI double by Henry Ramos, giving the Bats a 1-0 lead.
After pitching 1.2 scoreless innings and recording two strikeouts, starter Levi Stoudt took a ball off the lower leg and left the game. Zack Brown took over, securing a flyout to escape a bases-loaded situation. In total, Brown also threw 1.2 innings and allowed only one hit.
The Bats strengthened their lead in the bottom of the second. Starting off the rally, Johnny Pereda hit a double and Michael Siani drew a walk. With two runners on, Nick Martini blasted a two-out, three-run homer to put Louisville ahead 4-0.
Indianapolis put their first runs on the board in the top of the fourth, cutting the Bats' lead down to 4-2.
Louisville answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three additional runs. Matt Reynolds got the effort going with a single, followed up by Jose Barrero who was hit by a pitch. Thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jhonny Pereda and a single by Michael Siani, both Barrero and Pereda scored to make it 5-2. For the second time tonight, Martini smashed another three-run homer, also with two outs, to give Louisville a comfortable lead of 8-2.
Indianapolis fought back in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs for a score of 8-7.
After a rain delay, the Indians tied up the score in the top of the eighth following a Louisville fielding error.
The Bats threatened to come back in the bottom of the eighth, getting two runners on, but were unable to take advantage.
Indianapolis tacked on six more runs in the ninth to walk away with a 14-8 lead.
The Bats will play game five of six against the Indians tomorrow, Sunday, July 2 with the first pitch set for 1:05 pm E.T. Righthander Michael Mariot (3-0, 1.42) is scheduled for Louisville against Indianapolis' RHP Jared Jones (0-1, 5.06).
