Iowa Splits Sunday Double Header, Secures Series Split

PAPILLION, NE - The Iowa Cubs (46-32) split Sunday's double header versus the Omaha Storm Chasers (40-37) to take the series lead 3-2.

In game one, Omaha broke open scoring early in the bottom of the first with a walk and a pair of singles from John Rave and Nate Eaton. The second inning went on to be scoreless for both teams.

The Storm Chasers piled on to their lead with a six-run third inning. Omaha recorded eight hits in 11 plate appearances. Angelo Castellano led off the inning with a double and would later record his second hit of the inning with an RBI single.

John Rave and Nate Eaton each reached on singles and were plated on a three-run home run from Tucker Bradley. A double from Adeiny Hechavarria and singles from Clay Dungan and Jose Briceño rounded off the big inning for Omaha.

Iowa answered back in the top of the fourth as Dom Nuñez drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 7-1. Despite having the bases loaded, they could only get one which would be their only run of the game.

Omaha plated a pair of runs in the fifth as Hechavarria doubled and Castellano homered for his third hit of the game. The Storm Chasers scored another pair of runs in the sixth bringing the game to a final of 11-1.

Game two was scoreless for both sides through three and a half innings. The Storm Chasers were the first to score once again, plating their first run on a wild pitch and their second on a Nate Eaton home run. Their 2-0 lead after the bottom of the fourth didn't last long.

The I-Cubs quickly answered back in the top of the fifth as Miles Mastrobuoni singled to lead things off. Luis Vázquez followed with a double in the right field corner. Iowa tied things up at 2 with Bryce Windham's two-run single, his second hit of the day.

Iowa got another base runner on as Yonathan Perlaza singled. They broke open scoring and took the lead with a 431-foot, three-run Matt Mervis home run. Iowa extended their 5-2 lead as Nelson Velázquez got a long ball for himself in the top of the seventh.

Brendon Little and Daniel Palencia closed things out in the bottom of the seventh with three straight strikeouts to give Iowa the 6-2 win.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Today's split marks Iowa's third of the season, moving them to 2-1-3 in double headers this season.

- Game two's come from behind win marked Iowa's 22nd comeback win of the season

- Matt Mervis slugged his second home run of the series and brought his series total RBI to five
