Late Third-Period Goal Lifts Royals over Admirals
April 2, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release
READING, Pa. - The eighth matchup of the year between the Admirals and Reading Royals ended with Norfolk falling, 3-2, Saturday night at Santander Arena.
The Royals struck first when Yannick Tifu scored as Norfolk netminder, Nic Riopel, attempted to get to his feet after being knocked down. After some controversy, Reading was given the red light, and at 7:32 in the opening frame, the Royals earned their first goal of the night.
Danick Gauthier put the Admirals on the board at 3:45 in the middle frame after receiving a feed out in front from Greg Chase. Chase cut back behind the net and set Gauthier up in the slot. Gauthier snapped his 14th goal of the season behind Reading netminder, Matt Skoff, deadlocking the score, 1-1.
Former Royal, Robbie Czarnik, edged Norfolk to a 2-1 lead after tipping one in with help from Maxime Legault. Czarnik buried his 25th goal of the season when he tipped the puck past Skoff leg from the doorstep, moving the Admirals ahead at 11:35 in the second period.
A turnover in the neutral zone resulted in Reading's game-tying goal. After splitting two Norfolk defenders in the slot, Nikita Kashirsky's backhander was lifted up and over Riopel's shoulder at 15:47, ending the second period tied.
Tifu would hit twine again to break the tie at 15:11 of the third period. He pushed his team ahead as a quick wraparound attempt sneaked past Riopel, giving Reading the 3-2 lead. His late-period goal would be the game-winner, securing the Royals' 7th victory of the year over the Admirals.
Nic Riopel denied 39 of 42 Reading shots, and Skoff blocked 18 of the Admirals' 20 attempts on net. Both teams went scoreless on the man-advantage and played strong even-strength games.
The Admirals will meet the Royals again Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. to end their season series.
