Almeida, Owuya Lead Grizzlies Past Aces 6-2
April 2, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
WEST VALLEY, UTAH - Barry Almeida had 2 goals and an assist, Chales Sarault had 2 helpers and Mark Owuya made 26 saves as the Utah Grizzlies defeated the Alaska Aces 6-2 Friday at the Maverik Center.
Alec Hajdukovich got the Aces on the board after Alaska weathered an early Utah storm. Hajdukovich was in the left circle surrounded by Grizzlies...in Alaska, a scary proposition, but in Utah he calmly fired a wrist shot that eluded Owuya for his 2nd goal of the season in his 4th pro game. Tommaso Traversa earned the assist at the 4:34 mark of the period.
Utah answered with two of their own, with three Grizzlies figuring in the scoring. At 11:25, Barry Almeida parked in front of the Alaska net a tipped home a shot for his 25th goal of the season. Assisting was Charles Sarault and Matt Berry. Then it was Berry's turn to rip one home from the left circle under Aces netminder Lukas Hafner, who was outstanding in the period. Assists on Berry's goal at 13:04 went to Almeida and Sarault.
In the second period, the bad blood started to boil, but first the scoring. At 5:03, Alex Krushelnyski batted out of mid-air a rebound of Eric Higby's shot to make it 3-1. Alaska's Peter Sivak then tallied a power play strike off a beauty of a feed from Stephen Perfetto. It was Sivak's 20th goal of the season. Then Ryan Hayes motored his way to the Alaska net and buried the puck behind Hafner to return the lead to two goals at 4-2 Utah.
The end of the second period featured somewhat of a line brawl, as the teams did plenty of chirping at each other and threw a few punches...a few landed, many more not so much. Out of it all, 7 game misconducts were handed out by referee Zac Blazic.
The third period was sloppy. Utah's Brent Gwidt scored at 4:50 on a nice backhand roofer, then Almeida completed the scoring with a tap-in at 15:34.
Utah outshot Alaska 40-28 for the game.
The same two teams play again Saturday night at 5:05pm ADT in West Valley.
The Aces return to the Sullivan Arena to close out the 2015-16 season with a three-game series vs Colorado beginning Wednesday, April 6.
