Herbert Scores Twice, Rays Falls to Orlando

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC-The South Carolina Stingrays (41-18-7-4) battled back from a 4-1 deficit to earn a point and force overtime, but the Orlando Solar Bears (32-27-4-5) earned a 5-4 victory in the extra session Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Colton Saucerman scored his first professional goal in his first professional game for South Carolina and Caleb Herbert scored two goals and an assist. The Stingrays are now 9-0-3-1 in the past 13 games.
In the game's opening 20 minutes, the Solar Bears would score four times to jump out to a big lead. Defenseman Mark Louis opened the scoring only 1:46 into the game for Orlando, converting on a 3-on-2 to make it 1-0.
The Solar Bears would strike twice more to jump out to a 3-0 lead as Eric Faille beat South Carolina netminder Vitek Vanecek with a one-timer from the left wing at 5:26. At 15:03, Jack Rodewald made it 3-0 on a power play, knocking the puck out of midair past Vanecek.
The Stingrays would respond as Saucerman scored his first professional goal in his first professional game at 16:49 of the opening period. Joe Devin won a faceoff back to Saucerman, and the defenseman's one-timer beat a screened Orlando goaltender Ryan Massa to make it 3-1.
The Solar Bears would quickly respond to make it 4-1 on a Brendan Miller goal at 18:10.
In the second period, the Stingrays took the game over. Trevor Gillies sparked the team with a fight with Orlando's Mark Louis at 2:25 of the middle frame. From that point on, it was all Stingrays. The Stingrays outshot Orlando 12-2 in the second period. Austin Fyten scored at the 15:50 mark to cut the lead to 4-2. He converted from the left side of the net, beating a sprawled Massa for his seventh goal of the season.
At 17:43, the Stingrays would score again. Herbert scored one of the prettiest goals of the season, maneuvering around an Orlando defender, then making an impressive deke to tuck the puck past Massa to make it 4-3 Orlando.
Herbert would score again to tie the game at 3:10 of the third period and send the crowd of 5,625 into a frenzy. Herbert accepted a Spencer Humphries pass and skated past the defense. He slid a shot through Massa's five-hole to make it 4-4.
Massa stood on his head in the third period, stopping 18 shots, to force overtime. In the extra session, Miller scored his second goal of the game at 2:44 to give Orlando the win.
The Stingrays outshot the Solar Bears 44-17. The Stingrays went 0-for-1 on the power play while the Solar Bears were 1-for-5.
The Stingrays head on the road for the final three games of the regular season next week. The team is in Atlanta on Wednesday and Norfolk on Friday and Saturday.
