The Story:
James Stefan stretched his goal-scoring streak to three games, but Eric Alarie's two tallies and Connor Ungar's 42 saves gave the Moose Jaw Warriors (25-14-0-2) a 4-2 victory over the Winterhawks (28-7-2-1) on Friday night.
Portland's Jan Špunar stopped 28 of 31 shots in the loss.
After netting the final goal of the last two games, Stefan decided to open the scoring with a laser from the high slot at 8:07 of the first for his 13th of the campaign. Moose Jaw began to press after falling behind, and eventually equalized on Cosmo Wilson's first career goal late in the frame. The Hawks largely dominated the second period but couldn't solve Ungar in the frame, and Moose Jaw's Alarie made no mistake on a late-period power play to give the hosts their first lead of the night at 19:49.
Portland kept up the pressure, though, and tallied a power-play goal early in the third to tie the game. Robbie Fromm-Delorme entered the zone with Jack O'Brien and fired a puck off of the latter's skate which lofted over the shoulder of Ungar to make it 2-2. But despite the Hawks ultimately outshooting the Warriors 44-32, it was the hosts netting the deciding goal(s) with under two minutes to play as Alarie potted his second and Ryder Korczak potted an empty-netter to seal a 4-2 victory.
Portland now gears up for a matchup with the Regina Pats tomorrow night at 5:00 P.M. PT.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"We played a good game, some things weren't the best for us but we had some bad luck and it's okay...the focus (for tomorrow), just to score more goals and win the game. (Being with Portland) is helping me so much, I'm making good progress...hockey here is faster, it's better, everything is better. Everything is helping me here."
Winterhawks goaltender Jan Špunar
