South Bend Cubs News Release

Appleton, WI - In his best performance so far as a pro, South Bend Cubs right-hander Connor Noland worked five shutout innings against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Appleton on Thursday night. As he was in line for his first professional win, the Rattlers came back to beat the Cubs and held on for a 3-1 victory as they picked up their first win of the six-game series this week.

Noland ended both the 1st and 2nd innings with back-to-back strikeouts. With two hits given up by Noland both dispersed at different times, the right-hander was in control for his entire start. He mixed pitches well, as he worked with his college teammate from Arkansas, Casey Opitz, behind the plate.

With his four strikeouts, Noland left in line for the win as South Bend got on the board for the first time in the top of the 6th. Wisconsin starter Tyler Woessner was able to escape a pair of jams early. In the 2nd, he walked two batters but got out of it with no damage, then South Bend left the bases loaded in the 5th.

The 5th saw Liam Spence continue his hitting streak to six straight games. In the 6th, James Triantos led things off with a single. Ethan Hearn also singled to put Triantos at second base. A double steal was then executed, placing runners at 2nd and 3rd. Triantos hustled home on a wild pitch from a new lefty on the mound, Justin King, and the Cubs led 1-0.

That lead would stay until the bottom of the 7th. Noland exited, and Didier Vargas fired a scoreless 6th inning. The 7th featured the eventual game winning hit, a three-run home run by Eduarqui Fernandez. A laser shot over the left field wall gave Wisconsin the 3-1 lead.

The Timber Rattlers did not relinquish much else, with lefty Russell Smith firing two shutout innings with five strikeouts. Bo Bowman locked down the save in the 9th, and Wisconsin picked up their first win of the series.

Beloit also lost tonight, so South Bend remains 1.5 games of first place in the West Division. Peoria won, however, so they are now tied for second with South Bend.

The Cubs will hope to get back in the W column Friday evening at 7:40 PM EST in Game 4 of the series. With Kohl Franklin being called up to Double-A, Richard Gallardo moved up in the rotation and will start the game versus the Rattlers.
