Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored nine runs in the fourth inning and held on for a 10-6 victory over the South Bend Cubs at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Rattlers took advantage of six errors committed by the Cubs and reached double digits in runs for the first time this season.
Wisconsin (10-20) scored first with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. Eric Brown Jr reached second on an infield single and a throwing error. Robert Moore cashed in the gift with a single to right and Brown scored for a 1-0 lead.
The game took a turn in the bottom of the fourth inning as South Bend (17-14) committed five errors and Wisconsin scored nine runs to take a 10-0 lead. Je'Von Ward and Eduardo García started the inning with singles. Alex Hall was next, and he hit a grounder back to pitcher Richard Gallardo, who threw to second base for the force. Shortstop Scott McKeon, who was covering second, didn't make the catch and the ball rolled to second baseman Liam Spence. Ward was running for the plate off the deflection and scored ahead of the wild throw from Spence. The second error on the play let García take third and Hall move to second.
That was just the start of the insanity of the frame.
Darrien Miller cracked the next pitch for a three-run home run and a 4-0 lead. The homer was the second of the season for Miller.
Gallardo got the first out of the inning, but an error let Eduarqui Fernández reach. Gallardo walked Brown before Moore sent a grounder to the right side. Spence ranged over to make the play, but his throw to first was wild. By the time the ball was collected, Fernández had scored, Brown was at third, and Moore was standing on second.
The Cubs brought the infield in with Ben Metzinger at the plate. Metzinger's hard grounder was knocked down on a dive by third baseman Fabian Pertuz and the ball trickled to McKeon, who threw wildly to the plate too late to get Brown. Moore took third and Metzinger would move to second on the errant throw. That ended the game for Gallardo.
Reliever Chase Watkins got the second out of the inning. Then, García launched a three-run home run to left. That capped the nine-run inning and gave Wisconsin a 10-0 lead.
The Cubs didn't go away. The long layoff appeared to affect Wisconsin starter Alexander Cornielle. The right-hander retired the first eleven batters he faced and had seven strikeouts over four innings. However, he gave up two walks and a single to the first three batters he pitched to in the top of the fifth.
Cornielle got the first out of the fifth with his eighth strikeout of the game. Ethan Hearn followed with an infield single to score a run and it was 10-1.
Christian Franklin tightened the score a lot more when he hit a grand slam to right and the Rattlers lead was down to five.
Karlos Morales took over on the hill for Cornielle and got the last two outs in the fifth.
South Bend got another run in the sixth inning on a couple of Wisconsin misplays. Pertuz sent a flyball to right the Ward didn't pick up off the bat and the ball dropped in for a double. One out later McKeon hit another fly to right that Ward didn't see and the ball dropped for an RBI double to cut Wisconsin's lead to 10-6.
Morales got the final two outs of the sixth and pitched a perfect seventh to shut down any comeback thoughts that the Cubs had.
Brannon Jordan closed out the game with the final six outs to give Wisconsin their second straight win and even up the series with South Bend.
Game five of the series is Saturday afternoon. Joseph Hernandez (1-1, 3.57) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Tyler Santana has been named the starter for the Cubs. Game time is 1:10pm.
