Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Fort Wayne scored five runs in the seventh inning to erase a three-run deficit and complete a 9-5 comeback win over Beloit (Miami Marlins affiliate) at Parkview Field on Thursday night. A season-high crowd of 5,485 fans enjoyed the game on Hispanic Heritage Night as the TinCaps and Sky Carp wore special jerseys and hats. Fort Wayne took on its alternate identity as the Manzanas Luchadoras (Fighting Apples in Spanish), while Beloit played as the Paletas (an ode to fruit-flavored popsicles that are popular in Mexico).
Copa de la Diversión (Fun Cup) is a season-long event series around Minor League Baseball with more than 100 teams participating.
Fort Wayne catcher Brandon Valenzuela's run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh broke a tie score and gave the home team its first lead of the game at 7-5.
Initially, Beloit opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from first baseman Jake Thompson.
Fort Wayne answered with two of its own in the first thanks to a Beloit mistake and an RBI double by first baseman Carlos Luis. He finished with two doubles, while right fielder Justin Farmer reached base in all four of his trips to the plate, drawing three walks and blistering an RBI double in his final at-bat. Farmer stole two bases as well.
Beloit added a run in the second with a single by second baseman Yiddi Cappe to make it 4-2.
The Fort Wayne offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the seventh. Second baseman Lucas Dunn's sacrifice fly tied the game at 5-5 before Valenzuela's go-ahead single.
"Las Manzanas Luchadoras" added insurance runs in the eighth on Farmer's RBI double, followed shortly by third baseman Marcos Castañon's sac fly, making it 9-5 after eight.
Fort Wayne reliever Adam Smith provided two shutout innings in the eighth and ninth. Starter Victor Lizarraga (No. 7 Padres prospect) retired the final 10 batters he faced in a five-inning outing with three strikeouts.
Thursday was the first of four Hispanic Heritage games at Parkview Field in 2023. The next is scheduled for Friday, June 16.
Next Game: Friday, May 12 vs. Beloit Sky Carp (7:05 p.m.)
TinCaps Probable Starter: RHP Jairo Iriarte (No. 11 Padres prospect)
Sky Carp Probable Starter: RHP Edgar Sanchez
