Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL- The Chiefs mustered just five hits in their 3-1 loss to Dayton on Friday at Dozer Park. The loss evens the series at two games a side.
The highlight of the night for Peoria was the return of Tink Hence to the mound. The Cardinals No. 2 prospect was activated from the IL Thursday and made his first appearance since April 13. Hence turned in three shutout innings and whiffed five Dayton batters. He topped out at 99 mph on the mound.
On the Dayton side, Thomas Farr had a shutout outing of his own, his lasting five innings allowing just one hit, striking out six.
Dayton scored all three of its runs off Peoria reliever Dionys Rodriguez. Michael Trautwein hit a solo home run in the fifth to open the scoring, making it 1-0.
Trautwein went 2-for-4 and now has two home runs in the series.
Peoria tied the game in the sixth against reliever Adam Gozzo. Francisco Hernandez greeted Gozzo with a single. Nathan Church followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Hernandez scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one. A fielder's choice and a strikeout got Gozzo out of the inning.
Limiting the damage in the sixth allowed Dayton to re-take the lead in the seventh. Wendell Marrero singled to open the inning. Jack Rogers then doubled to left-centered with Marrero scoring on an errant throw back into the infield to make it 2-1.
Dayton loaded the bases in the eighth thanks to a couple walks and an error. Rogers would hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Rodriguez took the loss after 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out two and walking two.
The Chiefs threatened in the ninth against Vic Timpanelli. Victor Scott doubled and was then retired on an Aaron McKeithan fielder's choice. Jimmy Crooks was hit by a pitch which brought the winning run to the plate. Timpanelli wiggled out of the jam by getting Jeremy Rivas to ground into a double play to end the game.
Peoria now drops to 17-14 while Dayton moves to 14-17. The series continues tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 P.M.
