Lansing Shut out in Cedar Rapids' DH Sweep

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Gabriel Maciel hit a walk-off grand slam in Game 1 and Jordan Díaz committed a run-scoring throwing error in Game 2, as the Cedar Rapids Kernels (24-20) swept a series-opening doubleheader from the Lansing Lugnuts (20-24), 4-0 and 1-0, on Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The two games were dominated by pitching, with the two teams combining for just 11 hits in 14 innings.

In Game 1, Lansing starter Bryce Nightengale tossed two hitless and scoreless innings with two strikeouts and David Leal followed with four scoreless innings of relief, but Cedar Rapids' Jon Olsen and Jordan Gore matched the Lugnuts duo at every step, holding the Nuts' offense to one hit - an Elvis Peralta, Jr. single in the fourth inning.

Trey Cabbage led off the bottom of the seventh and final inning with a double to right-center off Leal, his second double of the game and the Kernels' second hit of the game. He moved to third on a flyout to right from Jair Camargo, and the Lugnuts elected to intentionally walk Alex Isola and Michael Helman to load the bases.

Leal fanned Max Smith for the second out, the southpaw's seventh strikeout, but Maciel homered to left to end the game.

Game 2 was an all-Copa de La Diversión match-up, with the Lansing Locos facing Las Cinco Estaciones de Cedar Rapids. Lansing starter Seth Shuman and Cedar Rapids starter Andrew Cabezas each notched six strikeouts in five scoreless innings, with Shuman allowing two hits and a walk and Cabezas giving up four hits and two walks.

In the last of the sixth, Dalton Sawyer walked Spencer Steer and gave up a broken-bat single to Seth Gray before setting down Wander Javier and Cabbage on consecutive lineouts. Lansing brought in Charles Hall to face Alex Isola, who grounded to Díaz at third. Díaz attempted to throw to second for the inning-ending force, but his throw was low, bouncing away from second baseman Cobie Vance into right field as Steer scored the game's only run.

Vance led the Locos' offense with a pair of singles in three at-bats in the losing cause.

Lansing had only been shut out twice all season entering the day.

Right-hander Richard Guasch (2.15 ERA) starts the third game of the six-game series at 6:35 p.m. local / 7:35 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, opposed by Kernels right-hander Ben Gross (3.23 ERA).
