Konopka Named to ECHL All-Rookie Team

WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling Nailers of the East Coast Hockey League announce that forward Zenon Konopka has been named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team. The All-Rookie Team was determined in a vote of ECHL coaches, who were each asked to select a goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards.

Konopka, a 22-year-old native of Niagara Falls, ONT, ranks third among ECHL rookies with 42 assists and is sixth in scoring with 63 points in 65 games. For the Nailers, his 63 points leads the team in scoring. He also leads the team in assists and is tied for the team lead in goals with 21 and game-winning goals with four. Konopka is also second on the team in plus/minus with a +5 rating and is tied for third with four power play goals.

This season, Konopka was selected to represent Wheeling in the 2003 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game and recorded one assist in the Northern Conference 8-2 win. He also was called up to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League and appeared in four games with the Penguins. During his AHL, experience he recorded one assist.

The other members of the 2003 ECHL All-Rookie Team are goaltender Adam Hauser of the Jackson Bandits, defensemen Jonathan Zion of the Richmond Renegades, Grady Moore of the Toledo Storm and forwards Jason Jaffray of the Roanoke Express and Mike Glumac of the Pee Dee Pride.

The Nailers play two home games this weekend. On Friday the Johnstown Chiefs play in Wheeling at 7:30p.m. for Season Ticket Holder Ticket Redemption Night. On Sunday the Nailers end their regular season against the Toledo Storm at 3:00p.m. Sunday will be Fan Appreciation Day with prizes to be given out during the game and a skate with the Nailers after the game.
