San Diego Gulls News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The San Diego Gulls were up 2-0, but the Idaho Steelheads came back to tie it in regulation and won it in the shootout 3-2 before 4,817 at the Bank of America Centre Wednesday night.

R.J. Enga and Mike Garrow gave the Gulls a two-goal cushion midway through the second period, but from there, the Steelheads (50-13-4) took over. Ben Keup and Adam Copeland scored back-to-back goals to tie the game, while their teammates beat Trevor Koenig three times in the shootout.

On a normal night Steve Martinson would hate a shootout loss, especially against rival Idaho. But even with the overtime setback tonight, the Gulls gain a valuable point in the West Coast Hockey League standings. San Diego (41-20-5) now leads the Bakersfield Condors by two points for second place and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue and Orange have six games left to Bakersfield's five.

The Gulls stormed out of the locker room, out-shooting Idaho 13-6 in the first period. They were rewarded with a 1-0 lead on Enga's 27th goal 2:17 into the contest. David Neale skated the puck into the Idaho zone and whipped a pass in front of the net to Jamie Miller, who took a couple of whacks that Blair Allison turned away. But on the third whack, Enga was able to tip it just over the goal line.

San Diego carried the momentum into the second period and grabbed a two-goal cushion, thanks to Garrow. Clayton Read took the puck out of the corner and centered it to Garrow, who charged in from the point and blasted one by Allison at 9:15. It was Garrow's ninth goal of the season, but only his first since Jan. 17.

Idaho cut the lead in half with a power-play goal at 15:15 of the second. Jonathan Shockey worked the puck to Petr Suchanek, whose shot from the point was redirected in by Keup for his 14th tally.

It took only 37 seconds into the third period for the Steelheads to tie the game, 2-2. Copeland took a pass from Suchanek, stepped over the blue line and fired a slap shot that eluded Koenig for his 17th goal.

In the extra frame, Derek Atkinson, Matt Oates and Dampy Brar scored for Idaho. San Diego received goals from Sylvain Deschatelets and Cory Cyrenne. Deschatelets is now nine of 12 in shootouts this season.

Notes: The Gulls have three more wins than the Condors, the tiebreaker if both teams finish with the same amount of points... Koenig, now winless in four games, is still four wins away from 100 in his Gulls career... San Diego is 35-5-4 when scoring first... If the Steelheads win four of their final five games, they will break the WCHL record for most wins in one season... Idaho needs eight more points to set the all-time single-season high... Cyrenne returned to the lineup after missing the last 13 games with a concussion... Mark Pederson remains out with a groin injury. His status is now listed as week-to-week... Kevin Grant remains on injured reserve... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears

San Diego continues its set in Boise on Friday and Saturday, with both games starting at 6 p.m. (PST). The Gulls finish their final road trip of the regular season Wednesday, April 2 in Long Beach before returning home. All games can be heard live on 1130AM-KSDO with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play*.
