Shorthanded Steelheads Stymie San Diego in Shootout

BOISE, Idaho - Goaltender Blair Allison came up huge in the third period and the shootout, to lead the shorthanded Idaho Steelheads to a come from behind 3-2 win over the San Diego Gulls before a crowd of 4,817 at the Bank of America Centre.

Playing without their two top scorers, defenseman Scott Swanson and right winger Marty Flichel as well as defensemen A.J. Begg and Martin Vasut, center Rory McDade and right winger Jeff Shevalier (season-ending IR), the Steelheads won their sixth game in a row, and added to their league-record for home wins in a season with their 31st.

San Diego struck first at 2:17 when R.J. Enga knocked home his 27th goal of this year on a redirect by Jamie Miller. Dennis Purdie saved an Idaho goal that was shaping up when Jeremy Mylymok got a pass over to Matt Oates who had Gulls netminder Trevor Koenig out of position. Purdie was penalized for interference on the play. The period ended with San Diego outshooting Idaho 13-6 and up by one.

Though the Steelheads started the middle frame with a one-man advantage, and another at the 3:24 mark, they were unable to convert any of their chances. Gulls' Mike Garrow scored the next goal when he got one top shelf over Allison at 9:15. Clayton Read and Dean Tiltgen each recorded an assist on the tally. At 15:15 Idaho closed the gap to within one with Petr Suchanek's shot that was redirected by Ben Keup.

The Steelheads got the equalizer just :37 into the third period, when Adam Copeland scored his 17th of the season from the right circle. Suchanek recorded his second assist. Idaho had a chance to win in regulation in the last 1:30, but Jonathan Shockey's blast from just inside the blue line was a bit high.

In the shootout, Allison made three outstanding saves, while Derrick Atkinson, Matt Oates and Dampy Brar beat Trevor Koenig and Idaho won the shootout, 3-2.

Idaho improves its record when trailing after two periods to 4-10-0, while the Gulls' record after leading going into the third drops to 29-1-3.
