Fort Wayne Komets News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets and Wichita battled to the end Saturday night in Fort Wayne at the Memorial Coliseum with Fort Wayne prevailing 5-4 at the final buzzer for a sweep of the home weekend double-header series against the Thunder.
The Komets opened the game with three unanswered first period goals by Kaleigh Schrock, Tab Lardner and Frankie DeAngelis to go into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead. Wichita's defenseman Andrew Martens found the net with a pair 26 seconds apart in the eighth minute of the second before Mathieu Curadeau gave the K's a 4-2 lead with a marker 57 seconds later. Wichita stormed back with two more goals by Martens at 11:40 and 13:42 to give the defenseman a four-goal night and draw the Thunder even at 4-4 at the second intermission.
Fort Wayne's P.C. Drouin scored the eventual game winner at 3:08 of the third. After Drouin's goal there was no further scoring despite a penalty shot awarded Wichita with two seconds remaining in the game during a Thunder power play. Matt Robinson was given honors with the free shot but was repelled by Komet goalie Nick Boucher giving the Komets the win and extending their winning streak to five games.
At the 19:58 mark of the third period 27 penalties were called including eight misconducts for Wichita and one for Fort Wayne. The game finished with a total of 47 offenses totaling 205 minutes in penalties.
Boucher earned his fourth straight win in his third straight start making 21 saves. Thunder goaltender Marty Magers suffered his third loss of the season allowing five goals on 29shots.
The Komets improved to 18-18-5 and reach the .500 mark for the first time of the season since October 30th while Wichita suffered their first loss in regulation in 10 games and fell to 23-16-4.
