Thunder Fight Valiantly, But Fall to Komets
February 5, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN- The Wichita Thunder lost 5-4 to the Fort Wayne Komets at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum on Saturday night.
Wichita rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game, but P.C. Drouin's goal at 3:08 in the third gave Fort Wayne a 5-4 lead that they held through the end of the game.
Driving to the net on a power play with an extra attacker, Matt Robinson was awarded a penalty shot with 2.3 seconds left when the Komets' were called for covering the puck in the crease. Robinson was stopped by Fort Wayne goaltender Nick Boucher who used a poke check in front of the crease.
Following the penalty shot, a series of fights and penalties broke out beginning with Thunder goaltender Marty Magers, who attempted to fight Boucher. Boucher refused and Magers was sent to the locker room. Lance Galbraith and Daniel Tetrault then dropped the gloves with Bobby Phillips and Craig Cescon respectively.
Before what would have been another faceoff, Jason Goulet locked horns with Dustin Molle, while Robin Richards fought Kaleigh Schrock. The Thunder totaled 124 penalty minutes in the game.
Andrew Martens rallied the Thunder from a 3-0 deficit in the second to an eventual 4-4 tie by the end of the period. Martens connected twice on a power play just 26 seconds apart at 8:25 and 8:51. The Komets re-extended the lead to 4-2 on a goal from Mathieu Curadeau at 9:48, but Martens popped two more at even strength at 11:40 and 13:42 to tie the game.
It was the first time since the CHL's merger with the WPHL that a defenseman scored four goals in a game.
The Komets built a 3-0 lead at the end of the first. Kaleigh Schrock scored at 8:23 for the first goal of the night. Tab Lardner connected on a two-on-one to the left side of Magers at 10:10. Frankie DeAngelis fired a rebound past Magers at 13:46 to make it 3-0.
The Thunder returns home on Friday, February 11th when they host the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. For tickets, call the arena box office at (316) 755-SEAT or visit the Thunder's official website at www.wichitathunder.com.
