Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (17-24-4) were able to force overtime against the Rapid City Rush (27-17-4) late in the third but the Rush scored 1:31 into overtime for the 2-1 victory against the Bees. The Bees did earn a point in the overtime loss. Dan Gendur scored the lone Bees goal.
The Killer Bees and Rush played to a scoreless first period though each team had a few opportunities. The Bees outshot the Rush 19-9 but each netminder, Juliano Pagliero for the Bees and Danny Battochio for the Rush, made every save asked.
The Rapid City Rush started the scoring with a second period shorthanded strike at 5:08. Ryan Menei was able to sneak behind the Killer Bees defense and on the breakaway shot the puck blocker side beating Pagliero.
The Rush held a 1-0 lead after two periods of play and would start the third with 3:53 of a power-play after Dominic D'Amour was whistled with a double minor for tripping and roughing as part of a series of four penalties called, three against the Bees and one against the Rush. The Bees penalty kill continued it's strong play killing off the extra-man attack.
In the third period the Bees would tie the game late as Den Gendur scored his ninth goal of the season while the Bees were on the power-play. Gendur picked up the puck in neutral ice and was able to catch the Rush in the middle of a line change and drove towards the net shooting top corner.
The game would head to overtime after the teams played the final five-plus minutes scoreless.
In overtime the Rush would secure the victory at the 1:31 mark as Konrad Reeder scored his ninth of the season. Reeder received a pass and drove towards the net while being pressured by three Bees. As the four players went tumbling towards Juliano Pagliero the puck found its way to the back of the net for the game winner.
The Bees are set to take to the road for the first time since early January. The Bees will play a three-in-three this coming weekend with stops in Wichita, Texas, and an afternoon affair against Allen.
