Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, IL - Jeff Jakaitis made 43 saves and Nick Canzanello's second period goal stood up as the game winner as the Dayton Gems defeated the host Quad City Mallards 3-2 Saturday night.
Jakaitis was at his busiest in the second period as he stopped 18 Quad City shots, while at the other end the Gems forged in front by scoring twice in the second.
The Gems broke a 1-1 tie when Nathan Oke's long-range drive was deflected past Mallard goaltender Adam Russo at 2:47 of the second. At 12:42, Canzanello pounced on a loose puck in the Mallard goalmouth to stretch the Dayton lead to 3-1.
Joe Blaznek one timed Joel Gasper's feed home from the slot just 57 seconds into the third period to cut the gap to 3-2, but despite pressuring throughout the rest of the third, the Mallards were unable to produce an equalizer.
It was the Mallards who had grabbed the early momentum when Zac Pearson walked in alone to score the opening goal at 8:26 of the first period. Brandon Naurato tied the score at 13:07 of the first with a one timer from the right wing circle that would prove to be the first of three straight Dayton goals.
The Mallards on Saturday activated center Joel Gasper, while Quad City defenseman Tyler Townsend was granted leave by the Central Hockey League.
The Mallards return to action Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. on home ice against the Colorado Eagles. Fans attending Tuesday's night game will be able purchase $2 drafts and soft drinks at i wireless Center concession stands.
