Bridgeport Islanders News Release

After taking a long look at University of Minnesota forward Matt Koalska, the Islanders decided he was the kind of player their organization could not have enough of. As a result, the Islanders have signed the St. Paul native to a contract and Koalska will get an even more intensive look come training camp in September. Koalska, 24, just finished his four-year collegiate career at Minnesota, where he was a member of back-to-back national championship teams in 2002 and 2003.

The 6-0, 198-pound Koalska led the Gophers with 26 assists and finished third on the team in scoring with 39 points in 44 games last season. He set an NCAA Regional record for fastest goal to start a game when he scored just 13 seconds into a win over Ferris State on March 29, 2003. He also assisted on the championship-clinching goal versus New Hampshire two weeks later.

Koalska was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the fifth round of the 2000 NHL draft. He was born on May 16, 1980, eight days before the Islanders won their first Stanley Cup.
