Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Eloy Jiménez homered and reached base four times to help lead the Charlotte Knights to a 5-3 win over the Norfolk Tides on Monday in the opening game of their four-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. The win was Charlotte's 50th of the 2018 season.
Jiménez, the top prospect in the Chicago White Sox system, swatted his eighth home run of the season in the first inning. His solo shot, a 397-foot blast, was his 18th overall of the season. He hit a total of 10 home runs in 53 games with the Double-A Birmingham Barons earlier this season. He has eight home runs in just 26 games with the Knights since his promotion. He finished Monday's game 2-for-2 at the plate and is now hitting .396 with the Knights this season.
One inning later, catcher Dustin Garneau launched his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning. The Knights added two more runs along the way with help from shortstop José RondÃÅn, who connected on a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Right fielder Ryan LaMarre chipped in with two hits.
RHP Spencer Adams (3-3, 3.29) allowed just two runs on five hits over six innings to earn his third win of the season. Adams threw 98 pitches and struck-out two batters on the evening. In relief of Adams, LHP Caleb Frare worked two scoreless innings. Frare, who was acquired from the New York Yankees on Sunday in exchange for international signing bonus pool money, walked one batter and struck-out three. RHP Ian Hamilton earned his fifth save of the season.
The Knights will continue their four-game series against the Tides on Tuesday night. Pre-game radio coverage of Tuesday's 7:04 p.m. game is set for 6:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action. RHP Michael Kopech is expected to get the start for Charlotte on Tuesday.
