From the Notes

ABOUT YESTERDAY: The Indians split their twin bill with Buffalo yesterday, dropping Game 1 by a 2-1 margin before blanking the Bisons in Game 2, 2-0. Tim Lopes hit a tiebreaking RBI double off Dovydas Neverauskas in the sixth inning of the opener, putting Brandon Waddell (L,4-6) on the hook for the loss. The Tribe had just six singles in the game and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. In the second contest, Damien Magnifico (5.0ip) and Matt Tracy (6.0) dueled in a scoreless ballgame, but the Indians broke through against Craig Breslow (L, 0-1) in their final at-bat. Playing as the away team on their home field, the Indians tallied four hits in the seventh, the last two being run-scoring infield singles off the bats of Erich Weiss and Kevin Newman. Jesus Liranzo (W, 2-1) pitched the final two innings to complete Indy's league-high 13th shutout of the season. The Tribe had six last at-bat victories on the season entering their five-game weekend series against Buffalo; three of their four wins in the series came in their final at-bat.

SIX-WIN HOMESTAND: Indy went 6-2 on its homestand vs. Rochester (2-1) and Buffalo (4-1), marking their first six-win homestand of the season. Indy had a pair of 6-1 homestands in 2017, doing so from May 8-14 vs. Charlotte (3-0) and Norfolk (3-1) and again from Aug. 7-13 vs. Buffalo (2-1) and Syracuse (4-0).

TAKING FOUR OF FIVE: The Indians won four of their five games against Buffalo, the first time Indy's won at least four games in a five-game set since May 15-18, 2017 at Columbus. Indy lost the first game of that series 5-4 but swept a doubleheader the next night over the Clippers.

DAMIEN DOMINATING: Damien Magnifico has shut down IL batters over his last seven appearances (one start), allowing just six hits and four walks with 14 strikeouts in 16 consecutive scoreless innings. He threw 60 pitches in a spot start in Game 2 for Indy yesterday, his most pitches in an appearance in the last four seasons and first start since Aug. 9, 2014. His 16.0-inning scoreless streak is a career high, narrowly eclipsing a 15.2-inning streak that spanned the 2015-16 seasons between Double-A Biloxi and Triple-A Colorado Springs when he was a Brewers prospect. That streak ran from Aug. 16, 2015 to April 21, 2016.

BY THE NUMBERS - 1: Damien Magnifico (5.0ip, 1h, 2bb, 3k) and Jesus Liranzo (2.0ip, 1bb, 2k) combined on a one-hitter in Game 2 of yesterday's doubleheader, just the fifth one-hitter thrown by the Tribe since Victory Field opened on July 11, 1996. The only other one-hitter thrown by the Indians at The Vic was on Aug. 23, 1997, when Steve Parris did so in a 2-0 win over Louisville (9.0ip, 1h, 0r, 3bb, 11k).

SPARK PLUG: Kevin Newman hit safely in both games yesterday, including two of Indy's five hits in its 2-0 victory in Game 2. The Tribe are 22-9 when he records two or more hits in a game. He leads the IL with 66 runs scored and 26 stolen bases and also ranks among league leaders in hits (T-2nd, 112), average (7th, .294) and doubles (T-3rd, 25). The 24-year-old has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games dating back to July 19, batting .298 (14-for-47) with one homer, two doubles, five RBI, nine runs scored and four stolen bases during that stretch.

ANDERSON IS AWESOME: Tanner Anderson tossed a five-pitch, 1-2-3 ninth inning on Saturday night to earn his fifth save in seven chances. Anderson has not allowed an earned run in each of his last nine appearances dating back to June 19, spanning 10.1 innings pitched. He has yielded just nine baserunners during that stretch (7 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP). For the season, the 25-year-old has allowed an earned run in just four of his 30 appearances with Indy. He has only surrendered one extra-base hit since May 29 (17.0ip) and five total (4 2B, 1 HR) in 42.1 innings for the Tribe. With runners on base and two outs, opponents are just 3-for-32 (.094) against him. He has inherited 17 baserunners and only one has scored. Anderson's seven walks in 42.1 IP is also good the second-lowest walk-per-9.0 IP ratio in the IL at 1.49.

BRUBAKER ON THE BUMP: The Indians will send Springfield, Ohio native J.T. Brubaker to the mound tonight for his fourth start of the season in his home state (also: April 18 at Akron, June 17 at Columbus, June 28 at Columbus). Brubaker, 24, has allowed 2 ER or less in nine of his 15 Triple-A starts, including seven of the last 10. The Indians are 8-1 when he allows 2 ER or less and 2-4 when he surrenders 3+ ER. Indy is 10-5 in his starts and 8-2 in his previous 10 outings.

NEW GUY IN THE BULLPEN: RHP Michael Feliz was optioned by Pittsburgh on Friday and joins the Tribe roster today in Columbus. Feliz, 25, was one of four players acquired by the Pirates in the Gerrit Cole trade with Houston on Jan. 13, 2018. Right-hander Joe Musgrove, third baseman Colin Moran and Tribe outfielder Jason Martin were the others included in the swap. Feliz appeared in 39 games with Pittsburgh, going 0-2 with a 5.53 ERA (25 ER/40.2 IP). He did strike out 10.4 batters per 9.0 innings pitched (47 K) but had a 1.50 WHIP (43 H, 18 BB).

INDIANS VS. CLIPPERS: The Tribe are just 2-8 in Columbus but 7-2 against them at Victory Field this season. The home/road splits for Indy's pitching staff are drastic, but the offensive numbers for Indy at The Vic and Huntington Park are similar. The breakdown is below:

.318 (99-for-311) - 11 hits per game 7-2 record
