Louisville Bats News Release

TOLEDO, Ohio - In search of their third straight win, the Louisville Bats (46-58) were unable to respond to a three-run opening inning from the Toledo Mud Hens (56-50) dropping game one by a 6-4 score at Fifth Third Field on Monday night. Gabriel Guerrero clobbered two home runs in tonight's game making it the sixth multi home run game for the Bats this season.

Justin Nicolino (5-6, 4.49) found himself on the other side of a firing Toledo offense despite settling in after the first two innings. He took his fifth loss of the season, going five innings allowing four earned runs from ten hits while striking out four on 90 pitches (64 strikes).

Following a recent losing streak, Toledo came out swinging. The Mud Hens recorded five hits in the first inning and with three consecutive singles, took no time to load the bases. A two-run single followed by a sacrifice fly put the Mud Heads ahead by three. With a runner plated in the second, the Toledo attack continued as another base hit put a fourth run up on the board.

Despite a quiet first half of the game, the Bats found momentum in the sixth. Gabriel Guerrero slung a solo homer to center field for the first Louisville run of the night. He is the second Bat this season with double-digit home runs, alongside D.J. Peterson who leads the team with twelve. The last time the Bats had two players with double-digit home runs was back in 2014 with Ruben Gotay (17) and Felix Perez (12).

Anxious to make a comeback and with no time to hit a first triple of the season like the present, Chadwick Tromp slashed a triple to right field to score Steve Selsky from second to cut the lead in half and make it 4-2 Toledo.

And then came the homers. Toledo responded immediately to Tromp's triple with a solo shot to extend the lead by three. The bottom of the seventh brought another when Mikie Mahtook sent his 11th of the season over the wall to push the Mud Hens to a 6-2 lead.

The Bats wanted every part of the action and with his recent return to the lineup, Gabriel Guerrero was crushing it. The top of the eighth saw Guerrero send his second solo shot of the night out of the park to take the first step towards a late comeback. Guerrero now ranks second on the team with 11 home runs. D.J. Peterson then stepped up to continue the fight, slashing his 22nd double of the season and was then brought home by Taylor Sparks with his first Triple-A single to get back within two.

Despite the late effort, the Bats were unable to crawl back and steal the win, ultimately dropping the opening game 6-4. The teams will face off again on Tuesday night when right-hander Jose Lopez (4-9, 4.83) will duel against Toledo southpaw Tyler Alexander (2-4, 4.89). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
