Indianapolis Rally Stymies Clippers Momentum

Columbus Clippers News Release

The Indianapolis Indians defeated the Columbus Clippers, 4-2, tonight at Huntington Park thanks to a three-run ninth inning.

Despite quality starting pitching from both sides that had the teams locked up until then end, down 2-1, Indianapolis came through with a sac-fly and a two-run shot to win it and take a 1-0 series lead.

The Clippers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a timely two out rally. Johnny Field kicked it off with a booming double off the wall in right center to put himself in scoring position. The next batter, Adam Rosales, then punched a single over second base to score Field for the lead.

It didn't last long, though, as Indianapolis third baseman Pablo Reyes took advantage of a Mitch Talbot mistake pitch, depositing it over the left field wall to tie the game at 1-1.

That was Talbot's lone blemish, as he scattered four hits across his six innings of work. He walked and struck out one.

Andrew Miller took over for Talbot in the seventh on a Major League rehab assignment and pitched a three, up three down frame. He struck out one.

Neither teams scored until the eight when Yandy Diaz unleashed his third homerun of the year, a solo shot, to give the Clippers a 2-1 lead.

Ben Taylor came on in the ninth, but allowed Indy to tie things up with Kevin Kramer sac-fly before giving them the lead on a Ryan Lavarnway two-run homer.

The teams will face off in game two tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Huntington Park.
