(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights dropped Wednesday's game to the Memphis Redbirds by a score of 18-14 in 11 innings from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The Knights ripped five home runs on the evening, but dropped the slugfest.

Third baseman Ryder Jones and designated hitter Carlos Pérez went back-to-back with home runs in the second inning to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. The home run for Pérez was his team-leading third of the season. Charlotte added three more runs in the fifth inning to make it a 5-1 lead. Right fielder Mark Payton had a two-run single in the inning.

The Knights continued to hit the long ball on Wednesday and added three more home runs in a six-run fifth inning. Shortstop Romy Gonzalez, second baseman Laz Rivera and catcher Nick Ciuffo all went yard in the inning. The home run by Rivera -- his first of the season -- was a three-run blast.

While the Knights continued to put runs up on the scoreboard, the Redbirds did the same - including hitting the long ball. Charlotte native Alec Burleson and Juan Yepez each had two home runs apiece for the Redbirds. In all, the Redbirds combined to hit five home runs in the game.

RHP Emilio Vargas started for the Knights and allowed five runs (four earned) over five innings. Vargas was one of six pitchers used by manager Wes Helms on Wednesday. RHP Jhan Mariñez (0-1, 12.60) was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs (four earned) in the 11th inning.

The Knights will continue the series against the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals) at 7:04 p.m. on Thursday night. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The game will also air live on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
