Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
DURHAM, N.C. - Peyton Burdick homered and reached base four times on Thursday, but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp lost a seesaw battle with the Durham Bulls 7-6 from Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With the score tied at six, Tristan Gray led off the eighth with a single against Jacksonville (2-7) reliever Jimmy Yacabonis (0-1). The right-hander retired the next two Bulls (4-5), but Cal Stevenson tripled with two outs to knock in Gray and give Durham a 7-6 lead. Colin Poche then worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to seal the win and pick up his first save.
The Jumbo Shrimp battled back from a pair of deficits in the defeat. Down 5-3 in the fifth, Burdick walked to begin the frame before Lewin Díaz singled. Nick Fortes then launched an RBI double to draw Jacksonville within a run.
With the same score in the seventh, Burdick again walked to begin an inning. After a strikeout, a Fortes double advanced Burdick to third before a Charles Leblanc sacrifice fly evened the score at five.
However, Durham responded in the bottom of the seventh. Jonathan Aranda doubled with two outs before scoring on a René Pinto RBI single.
Jacksonville was able to rally again in the eighth. Bulls reliever Justin Sterner (1-0) walked both Joe Dunand and J.D. Osborne to jumpstart the frame. After a pop out, Erik González doubled home Dunand to knot the tally at six. However, Sterner fanned Burdick and Díaz to escape the jam to keep things at 6-6.
Burdick helped the Jumbo Shrimp initially jump out to a lead. González led off the game with a base hit before scoring on Burdick's RBI double. Two batters later, Fortes' sacrifice fly brought home Burdick to make it 2-0. A Burdick lead off homer in the third extended the advantage to 3-0.
Durham inched closer in their half of the third inning. Stevenson doubled with one out before coming around to score on Ryan Boldt's RBI single. After Boldt stole second and moved to third on a ground out, Aranda singled him in to cut the Jacksonville lead to 3-2.
The Bulls grabbed their first advantage an inning later. Miles Mastrobuoni singled with two outs before Niko Hulsizer and Stevenson each walked to load the bases. A two-run Boldt base hit put Durham in front before an Isaac Paredes RBI single put the margin at 5-3.
RHP Jordan Holloway (0-1, 9.00 ERA) starts for Jacksonville in Thursday's 6:35 p.m. first pitch from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on ESPN 690 and ESPN690.com.
