Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (4-4) were held to just four hits through the first eight innings, but scored three in the ninth to defeat the Toledo Mud Hens (2-6) by a score of 3-2 Wednesday night.
Adrian Sampson and Chase Anderson battled each other through four innings, as each starter allowed just one hit. Sampson was perfect through three innings, but an error, single and sacrifice fly brought in a run for Toledo, giving them a 1-0 lead.
Anderson struck out five and was relieved by Ricardo Pinto, who tossed three shutout innings of two-hit ball, striking out three batters himself. Despite walking five combined batters, Stephen Gonsalves and Erich Uelmen kept Toledo off the board, striking out six batters over their four innings.
Jack Lopez homered for the Mud Hens in the top of the ninth, growing their lead to 2-0. After recording just four hits through the first eight innings, Iowa's offense came alive in the ninth.
Facing Drew Carlton, Iowa got singles from Jared Young and Greg Deichmann along with a double from Brennen Davis to tie the game. Trent Giambrone stepped to the plate and delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Davis and giving the I-Cubs a 2-0 series lead over Toledo.
