Kings Can't Touch Martinez, River Bandits

Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Quad Cities' right-hander Carlos Martinez started the stifling trend with six scoreless innings and relievers Ryan Copeland and Cale Johnson continued the dominance as the River Bandits beat the Clinton LumberKings 5-0 on Tuesday night at Alliant Energy Field. The Bandits scored the only runs they'd need on a passed ball and error charged to catcher Steven Baron in the third inning.

Martinez (W, 3-2) was overpowering over his six innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Only once did the LumberKings have a runner at third base against him as Tim Morris singled and reached third with tow outs in the sixth, but Martinez struck out Kevin Rivers to end the inning and the threat.

The left-handed Copeland scattered three hits over 2.0 innings and struck out three and Johnson fanned two of the four he faced in a non-save ninth inning.

The River Bandits scored five times against right-hander George Mieses, but just one play would prove to be the difference. With the bases loaded and one out in the third inning, Mieses threw a pitch to Starlin Rodriguez that glanced off the end of Baron's mitt and went to the backstop. That sent Michael Swinson, who had reached on a single, home to score. Baron threw home to Mieses from the warning track but the throw got away, sending Ronny Gil around to score. Rodriguez then capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Oscar Taveras for a 3-0 Quad Cities' lead.

Nick Longmire singled, doubled and scored twice in the fourth and sixth innings with Colin Walsh plating him both times. Walsh lifted a two-out double to right-center in the fourth and singled with two outs in the sixth to raise the lead to 5-0.

Kings' second-baseman Jorge Agudelo went 3-for-4 with three singles including one off Johnson in the ninth but never advanced past first base. Stefen Romero went 2-for-4 with two singles but also never reached scoring position. The LumberKings have now lost four-straight games after starting the nine-game homestand 2-1.

The River Bandits, meanwhile, got 3-for-4 games out of Swinson and Walsh and a 2-for-4 effort out of Longmire. Their win keeps them at least two games ahead of the West Division Wild Card race.

The LumberKings (21-44) and River Bandits (36-28) do battle again in game two of the series tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. Left-hander Edlando Seco (1-0, 5.73) gets the call for Clinton, while Quad Cities counters with Rock Falls, IL native and St. Louis Cardinals' first-round pick, right-hander Seth Blair (3-3, 4.54).
