
Kernels split doubleheader at Beloit

Beloit, WI - The Kernels split a doubleheader with the Beloit Snappers on Tuesday evening at Pohlman Field, winning game one 3-1 and losing game two 4-0. In game one the Kernels held the Snappers to only two hits, downing Beloit 3-1. Brian Diemer (6-4) went six innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out three and walking one. Tyler Kehrer closed out the game for his first save. He went one inning and allowed no runs on no hits while striking out two.
The Kernels scored twice in the 3rd inning. Jesus Campos and David Harris both walked in the inning. They both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch by Snappers starter Manuel Soliman. With two outs Ricky Alvarez drove them both home with a single to center, giving the Kernels a 2-0 lead.
Beloit recorded their first hit of the ballgame in the 4th inning, and it resulted in a run for the Snappers. Nate Roberts was hit by a pitch with one out in the innings. He advanced to 2nd base on a wild pitch by Diemer. Michael Gonzales then singled to center for Beloit's first hit of the game, scoring Roberts and cutting the Kernels lead to 2-1. Soliman (2-4) took the loss for Beloit in five innings of work as the starter. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking three.
Michael Tonkin went one inning in relief for the Snappers. He allowed no runs on one hit while striking out none and walking two. The Kernels added an insurance run without a hit in the 7th inning. Travis Witherspoon walked to lead off the 7th inning. He stole 2nd base and reached 3rd base on a sacrifice bunt by Roland Gomez. Witherspoon then scored on a wild pitch by Blayne Weller, making the score 3-1. Weller went one inning for Beloit and allowed one run on no hits while striking out one and walking two.
In game two the Kernels were held to only three hits, losing 4-0. Beloit scored a pair of runs in both the 4th and 5th innings. Both innings began with Snappers being hit by a pitch. Nate Roberts was hit by a pitch to begin the 4th inning. Michael Gonzales then singled to right to put runners at the corners. Daniel Ortiz then doubled to right, scoring Roberts and putting runners at 2nd and 3rd base. Lance Ray then singled home Gonzales, making the score 2-0.
Hyeong-rok Choi was hit by a pitch to begin the 5th inning. Wang-Wei Lin then reached 1st base on an infield single, but a throwing error by Kernels second baseman Wes Hatton allowed runners to reach 2nd and 3rd base. RBI singles by Daniel Santana and Nate Roberts brought home the runners, extending Beloit's lead to 4-0. Justin La Tempa (2-4) took the loss for the Kernels. He went four innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out seven and walked none. Dakota Robinson pitched two innings in relief for the Kernels. He allowed no runs on two hits while striking out one and walking none.
Beloit's Ryan O'Rourke (1-1) was the winning pitcher in five innings of work. He allowed no runs on three hits while striking out eight. Clinton Dempster went two innings and allowed no runs and no hits while striking out four and walking one.
