14-year veteran hits milestone in 4-1 Condors win at Utah

WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - Kevin St. Jacques recorded his 1000th career on an empty net goal with 34 seconds remaining as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the Utah Grizzlies by a score of 4-1 in front of 4,466 fans at the "E" Center.

The Condors opened scoring with an early power pay goal. Scott Balan held the puck on the goal line near the far corner and fired a shot along the line toward Utah netminder Alfie Michaud. The Grizzlies goalie made the initial save, but Mike Hofstrand buried the rebound inside the near post to give Bakersfield a 1-0 lead just 1:44 into the game.

Utah capitalized on two full minutes of five-on- three hockey when Barret Ehgoetz led a three-on- one rush. Ehgoetz deked Bakersfield netminder Marty Magers off-balance and pushed the puck past Magers' left side. Ryan Kinasewich and Ed Hill assisted as the Grizzlies tied the game at 1-1.

The game wouldn't stay tied for long thanks to Dave Bonk's goal just 54 seconds later. Tyler Scott faked a shot past his defender and walked the puck into the right wing circle. Scott put a slap shot on net and the rebound was deflected by Mathieu Brunelle to Bonk, who snuck the puck inside the left post of Michaud to return the Condors lead with 7:24 remaining in the second period.

Eric Neilson scored his first professional goal as he stripped the puck at the Utah blue line and walked through the left wing circle. Neilson fired his shot past the blocker of Michaud to give the Condors an insurance goal and a 3-1 lead.

The Grizzlies pulled Michaud for the extra skater and opened the door for St. Jacques' milestone goal. Steve Howard picked the puck away from Ehgoetz and dished it to St. Jacques on the right wing. St. Jacques walked into the near corner and angled a shot across the goal line for his 349th career goal with 34 seconds left in the game.

Marty Magers earned the victory with 19 saves on 20 Utah shots. Alfie Michaud was credited with the loss despite making 27 stops on 30 Condor attempts faced.

Other notes: Kevin St. Jacques becomes the second Condor to record his 1,000th point with the team, matching the feat of Bakersfield great Paul Willett against Fresno on March 4th, 2003 at 3:34 of the third period. The Condors improved to 8-0-0 on Wednesdays and 23-0-2 when leading after two periods.

For the record: The Condors improve to 38-26-6 for 82 points. Bakersfield leapfrogs idle Long Beach and lead by a single point for 2nd place in the Pacific Division. The Condors and Ice Dogs each have two games remaining as Long Beach will visit the Las Vegas Wranglers on Friday then travel to Fresno in their season finale on Saturday.

Playoff picture: The Condors will face Long Beach in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. With the victory, Bakersfield has guaranteed the advantage should the two teams end the regular season with an even amount of points. Bakersfield holds the advantage on the first two tiebreakers: Total Wins (38-36 with two games remaining) and Head-to-Head Points (10-9, Condors win season series 4-1-2).
