SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls, who will get Alex Kim back in the lineup, look to take the rubber game in their series with the Idaho Steelheads tonight at the ipayOne Center. San Diego won Friday in overtime, but Idaho came back Sunday to win in a shootout.
SERIES HISTORY: The Gulls and Steelheads have met six times so far this season with San Diego holding a 4-1-1 series edge. Tonight is the last head-to-head match-up of the regular season.
2005-06 HEAD-TO-HEAD SERIES:
12/29/05 San Diego 1 @ Idaho 2
12/30/05 San Diego 7 @ Idaho 2
12/31/05 San Diego 5 @ Idaho 1
1/6/06 Idaho 1 @ San Diego 2
4/1/06 Idaho 2 @ San Diego 3 (OT)
4/2/06 Idaho 4 @ San Diego 3 (SO)
San Diego owns the all-time series match-up, posting a 45-26-8 record against its Northern Conference rival. The Gulls are 29-8-4 all-time against the Steelheads at the ipayOne Center.
VS. WEST DIVISION: The Gulls are 17-18-2 this season against the West Division and 9-7-1 at home.
LAST HEAD-TO-HEAD MEETING (APRIL 2 VS. IDAHO): Greg Rallo and David Bararuk each scored in the shootout, while rookie netminder Steve Silverthorne stopped all four San Diego shooters, leading the Steelheads to a 4-3 win Sunday in the second of a three-game series at the ipayOne Center. Gulls goaltender Kris Mayotte notched 40 saves in his third professional start and Steve Hildenbrand notched a goal and an assist to lead the Blue and Orange. It was a seesaw battle throughout regulation, as teams traded one-goal leads. Idaho went up 1-0, but the Gulls came back to take 2-1 and 3-2 leads before the Steelheads tied late in the middle frame.
GULLS UPDATE: San Diego (34-28-7) enters the day with 75 points, five behind the third-place Bakersfield Condors and six back of the second-place Long Beach Ice Dogs... If the Gulls are to catch Long Beach, they would have to win their remaining three games and have the Ice Dogs lose their final two matches (San Diego would then own the tie-breaker with more wins)... Bakersfield needs two points in its final three games to clinch third place (The Condors play in Utah tonight)... San Diego is unbeaten in its last four games (3-0-1) and 16 of its last 21 overall (14-5-2)... The Gulls are also unbeaten in seven straight games at home (6-0-1)... Out of their last 31 games, 20 have been decided by one goal... The Gulls are 8-for-37 on the power play in the last five games (21.6 percent)... They have allowed eight power-play goals in 45 chances in the last five games (82.2 percent)... San Diego is 20-9-5 at home this season...
PLAYER NOTES: Hildenbrand has a seven-game point streak, netting 11 during that span (5g, 6a)... Alex Kim, who played three games with the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates last week, is back in San Diego and should be in the lineup tonight. Kim is in the midst of a career-high 16-game point streak and six-game assist streak. He has 31 points during his streak and has scored 38 points (16g, 22a) in just 22 games overall... Michael Mole has won his last two starts, stopping 79 of 82 shots (.963 save percentage)...
IDAHO UPDATE: Idaho (42-21-8) starts the day 92 points, clinching third place in the West Division... The Steelheads will either play the Las Vegas Wranglers or Alaska Aces in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs... They are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games and also tied with the Wheeling Nailers for the sixth most points in the ECHL... Idaho is tied with the third-most road wins in the ECHL (22)... Bararuk has an 11-game point streak... Leading scorer D'Arcy McConvey was recalled to Iowa of the AHL yesterday... Idaho has the second-best power play in the ECHL (21.9 percent), but is 3-for-44 in six games against the Gulls this season...
TRANSACTIONS: R.J. Enga was released Monday... Kelly Askew was activated from the seven-day injured list Saturday, while Erik Johnson was activated Friday... Rookies Jeff Winchester and Conrad Martin signed Saturday... Dennis Shiryaev was placed on the seven-day injured list Saturday, while Bobby Cunningham was placed on the seven-day injured list Friday...
