
Kernels snap streak with 5-3 win over Burlington

BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Kernels snapped a five game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Burlington Bees on Friday evening. The Kernels got a strong five innings from Seth Fowler, scored three runs in the fourth inning, and three relievers pitched four scoreless innings for the win.
The Bees took the early lead in the first inning when Tony Thompson doubled home both Beau Taylor and A.J. Kirby-Jones, giving Burlington a 2-0 lead. The Kernels countered with a single run in the second inning. Brandon Decker's single to left field plated Ricky Alvarez, cutting the Bees lead to 2-1. Burlington put a run across in the third inning, extending their lead to 3-1. Jose Crisotomo tripled to lead off the inning and came home on Taylor's single up the middle.
The Kernels sent eight hitters to the plate in the fourth inning, scored three runs, and took a one run lead. Randal Grichuk and Decker singled to lead off the inning. Brian Hernandez then laid down a bunt in front of the plate. Bees catcher Beau Taylor fielded the ball and threw to second baseman Ryan Pineda, who was covering first base. Pineda dropped the throw from Taylor, was charged with an error, and Hernandez reached first base to load the bases.
Next batter, Marcus Nidiffer singled to score Grichuk and cut the Bees lead to 3-2. Jarrod Parks followed with a single to score Decker, tying the game 3-3. Rolando Gomez's sacrifice fly to center later in the inning scored Hernandez and gave the Kernels a 4-3 lead. Fowler (2-3) started and went five innings for the Kernels. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one.
The Kernels added a run in the seventh inning, pushing their lead to 5-3. Gomez doubled to right center with one out and came home to score on a single by Jeremy Cruz. The Kernels bullpen combined for four scoreless innings. Ty Kelley pitched one inning and allowed no hits while striking out one. Bryant George allowed no hits and struck out one in one inning of work. Dakota Robinson pitched the eighth and ninth innings, striking out five and allowing only one hit for his seventh save of the season.
Josh Bowman (7-6) started for the Bees and took the loss. He went four innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out two and walking two.
The Kernels return home on Saturday evening at 5:05 p.m. vs. Peoria, the Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. It will be Jimmy Buffett Night as the Cedar Island Band will perform after the game. Fans can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show after the Cedar Island Band performance.
