Dragons defeat Great Lakes

Dayton, Ohio- Chris Berset's bloop single to center field brought in Kurtis Muller from second base to break a 2-2 tie with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 3-2 on Friday. A crowd of 8,222 saw the game at Fifth Third Field as the Dragons completed a three-game sweep of the Loons and improved their record in the second half to 36-17.

The Dragons trimmed their "magic number" to clinch a playoff spot to nine with 17 games to play. They have gone 11-2 over their last 13 games.

The Dragons trailed 2-0 going to the bottom of the eighth when Billy Hamilton walked to start the inning. Hamilton stole second, went to third on an error, and scored on Ronald Torreyes' ground out to second base to tie the game. Muller then doubled to center and with two outs, Berset blooped a single in front of Great Lakes center fielder Leon Landry to bring in Muller and give Dayton a 3-2 lead.

Drew Hayes pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 20th save. The victory was credited to reliever Daniel Wolford (6-1), who pitched a perfect top of the eighth inning and improved his scoreless streak to 29.2 innings over 19 relief appearances dating back to June 9.

The Dragons collected just three hits in the game. Muller was on base three times with the double and two walks.

Dayton holds a six-game lead on Fort Wayne in the Eastern Division, and their playoff cushion increased to eight games over Great Lakes.

The Dragons begin a seven-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Lansing to meet the Lugnuts at 7:05 p.m. (WONE 980 AM). Kyle Lotzkar (2-1, 4.34) will start for Dayton. Dayton Dragons (71-52) 3, Great Lakes Loons (67-55) 2 August 19, 2011.
