LumberKings Take Middle Game 7-5
August 19, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Kevin Rivers homered with two men on in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the LumberKings a 6-4 lead and that was all they needed on their way to a series evening 7-5 win over the River Bandits Thursday night in Clinton, Iowa.
The Bandits scored first with a run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Chris Edmondson which plated Jonathan Rodriguez. Clinton answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning off Bandit starter Zach Russell (6-10).
Quad Cities wasted no time striking back. Geoff Klein hit a three-run two-out double in the top of the third to put the Bandits back in front 4-2. That would be all the Bandits would get while LumberKings went on to score five unanswered runs.
After the home run by Rivers in the fifth, Clinton added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a sac fly.
Klein and Joey Bergman each finished with two-hit games for Quad Cities. Klein went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Bergman finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Russell took the loss after allowing four earned runs, six total, over 4 1/3 innings. He gave up seven hits, issued three walks and struck out two. Clinton starter Stephen Kohlscheen (3-3) earned the win after surrendering four runs on seven hits over five innings. Jonathan Arias (7) earned the save by working a scoreless ninth.
The River Bandits look to rebound on Friday night for the series win. Right-hander Boone Whiting (3-1, 2.02) will start for the River Bandits against Clinton lefty Anthony Fernandez (5-3, 2.84). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton.
