Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that outfielder 2011 draftee John Andreoli has joined the Chiefs from Mesa of the Arizona Rookie League. To make room on the 25-man roster, outfielder Smaily Borges has returned to the disabled list with a calf strain.
Andreoli played two games with the Arizona League Mesa Cubs after signing earlier this week as a 2011 17th round draft pick. With Mesa he hit .429 (3-for-7) with one run scored, one walk, and a stolen base. Andreoli hit .317 with 41 runs, 31 RBIs, and 22 stolen bases for the University of Connecticut in 2011. He helped the Huskies to the NCAA Super Regionals where they fell to eventual College World Series Champions South Carolina. In 2010, as a college teammate of former Chief Pierre LePage, Andreoli hit .362 with 71 hits and 24 walks while recording an on-base percentage of .419. He played with the Brewster Whitecaps and the Wareham Gateman in the Cape Cod League in the summer of 2010. His father, John, played football at Holy Cross and in the NFL with the New England Patriots organization. His grandfather, Fran O'Brien, was a longtime baseball and basketball coach at M.I.T. and Holy Cross. His cousin, Daniel Bard, is a reliever for the Boston Red Sox.
Borges, 27, is hitting .233 with three homers, seven doubles and 15 RBI in 36 games this season. Since coming off the disabled list on July 27, Borges appeared in three games as the Chiefs' designated hitter going 5-for-11 with a double, run scored and three RBI. Borges was 2-for-6 at Kane County last Thursday and 2-for-3 with a two-run double on Monday against Clinton. Serving as both a player and a coach this season, Borges originally went on the disabled list on May 21 with a .215 average in 33 games.
Andreoli is the fourth player from the 2011 draft class to join the Chiefs' roster this season. Right-handed pitcher P.J. Francescon, a 40th round pick, was the first draftee in Peoria on June 25 and right-hander Pete Levitt (32nd round) joined the roster on July 4. Outfielder Taiwan Easterling, a 27th round pick out of Florida State University, made the move to Peoria on July 16 and Andreoli is the fourth.
